When the New York Jets traded for Aaron Rodgers, many thought that Zach Wilson would also benefit greatly. Being able to learn under one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, even if only for a couple of years, could do wonders for Wilson’s career. Fans already got to see the impact of Rodgers in Thursday night’s Hall of Fame game.
Zach Wilson Praises Aaron Rodgers “Great Call”
The first series that Wilson led was a pitiful three-and-out. On the next drive, Wilson uncorked a beautiful 57-yard pass to Malik Taylor. Wilson said after the game that the call was all Rodgers.
“Yeah, great call by Aaron Rodgers. Had to give him a little shoutout there. Yeah, backed up, taking a shot down the field. Kind of pick your matchup. Those guys were kind of just playing single-safety man. I think that’s great for preseason ball, so you can see what guys can win and separate. Malik’s done a great job all of training camp, so I wanted to go to his side. I liked the matchup with the corner as well. He did a great job winning.”
Rodgers did not play in the preseason and took on more of a coaching role. Even on the sidelines, Rodgers is able to exploit matchups for his team.
Career Turnaround?
Wilson got benched last season and many thought his career might be over. Now, there is some hope. Rodgers has said that he plans to spend a few years with the Jets meaning that Wilson gets a few years of practice but not be in the spotlight. While it seems unlikely that he would be the next Aaron Rodgers, if he were to turn into a serviceable starter, that would be a huge upgrade from the 2022 version of Zach Wilson. Only time will tell but Wilson’s career will be one to watch in the next half-decade.
The Jets ended up losing to the Cleveland Browns because of a great performance by Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Head coach Robert Saleh probably isn’t worried seeing as most starters did not play. Jets fans anxiously await week 1 when Rodgers will make his debut in a Jets uniform.
