The New York Jets are trying to do one thing in 2024: win the Super Bowl. Those are the expectations in the New York locker room with a healthy Aaron Rodgers back on the field. New York did a lot to try to put pieces around Rodgers this off-season that will help chase their first title since 1969.
Today, the Jets added a champion to their defense in an effort to provide depth at an extremely Important decision.
New York Jets Add 2x Champion To Their Defense
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini:
Adding depth at safety, the New York Jets signed former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick Lewis Cine to their practice squad on Wednesday, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Cine, drafted 32nd overall in 2022, was waived Tuesday after efforts to trade him were unsuccessful. After clearing waivers, he signed with the Jets with the expectation that he will be elevated to the 53-man roster as soon as he’s comfortable with the playbook.
Cine, who suffered a leg fracture in Week 4 of his rookie season, has played only 10 defensive snaps over his first two seasons (one tackle). In the preseason, he played a team-high 150 snaps, recording 13 tackles and one sack.
The Jets’ current starters are Tony Adams and Chuck Clark, with Ashtyn Davis and Isaiah Oliver backing them up. Oliver, a natural cornerback, was moved to safety in the offseason. Cine’s arrival means a return to his previous position, nickelback.
Cine won the National Championship with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2021 and 2022.
Although Cine was a hard-hitting safety with a knack for violence, many felt he did not possess the size or fundamentals to be an effective air player in the NFL. As an in-the-box safety, he was a throwback to an era when safeties tended to defend passes more. The Vikings drafting him in the first round was a head scratcher, especially after passing on Kyle Hamilton after trading away the 12th overall pick.
It is very clear that the Vikings passed up the opportunity to get the perfect safety in Hamilton in order to pursue a project in Cine. There was a question as to whether Cine could be as good as Hamilton, even if the rough edges were smoothed out.
It will be interesting to see if New York can get more out of Cine than the Vikings ever did.
