The New York Jets suffered a brutal loss in front of a national audience during week one of the 2024 NFL season. New York took on the reigning NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers on the road and got out played in nearly every facet of the game.
While Rodgers certainly could have played better, he didn’t hesitate to call out one of his teammates after the game.
Jets’ Aaron Rodgers Calls Out Teammate For Bad Play (Report)
According to JR Degroote of Athlon Sports:
Allen Lazard delivered a solid performance in the New York Jets’ season opener, but quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t hesitate to highlight areas where the veteran receiver could elevate his game.
Lazard caught six passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns in the Jets’ 32-19 Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. It was a rough night overall for New York in primetime but the connection between Lazard and his old Packers teammate Rodgers was a plus.
That being said, Rodgers isn’t letting Lazard off the hook for an early drop.
“He should have caught the stick to start the game,” Rodgers said on Wednesday when recapping Lazard’s performance.
Rodgers was clearly just giving Lazard a hard time and had plenty of good things to say about what he brought to the game.
“Other than that, he played really good,” Rodgers said. “He got paid being the grimy guy — sticking his head in there, blocking guys and finishing plays. I’m really proud of Allen. That’s what I expect of him.
The cool thing is that’s what he expects from himself. Last year was definitely really hard for him, but that’s the Allen you guys have seen all training camp and the Allen I know and love.”

In the offseason of last year, Lazard signed a four-year deal with the Jets that will pay him $44 million. In 14 games, he made 12 starts and caught 23 passes for 331 yards and one touchdown.
Rodgers’ return makes Lazard primed to smash those numbers this season.
