The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of one of the most disappointing and underwhelming seasons in recent franchise history.
After vowing to be “all-in” on 2024 last spring, owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys largely stayed on the sidelines during free agency, and have fielded a team that even before its defense became besieged by injuries, was vastly underperforming expectations.
Now, quarterback Dak Prescott is lost for the season after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery, there isn’t much hope that the Cowboys turn this season around.
Jerry Jones Seems to Make Call on Dallas Cowboys Coach Mike McCarthy’s Future
Following Sunday’s 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, some inside the league have been calling for head coach Mike McCarthy’s firing.
Even Cowboys All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons couldn’t bring himself to offer a ringing endorsement of his head coach after Sunday’s game.
“Mike can leave and go wherever he wants,” Parsons told reporters, according to Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. “Guys I kind of feel bad for [are] guys like Zack Martin and guys who might be on their last year or on their way out. Because that’s who I wanted to hold the trophy for. You want to win games and do great things with those type of legends who put in more time and work than Mike McCarthy ever did.
“Those are the kind of guys that I have so much sympathy and hurt for.”
Now, according to Jones, Parsons isn’t exactly correct. McCarthy isn’t going anywhere. At least, not yet.
“Mike is a heck of a coach, a great coach in my mind,” Jones said, per The Athletic. “[He] has and should have the opportunity to do better than we’re playing right now. I haven’t had good experience changing coaches in the middle of the season.”
McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, so there’s a pretty high likelihood that he’ll be coaching elsewhere in 2025. However, it sure doesn’t sound like Jones is in any hurry to fire McCarthy despite this season continuing to circle the drain.
