Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys made history Sunday, when the franchise signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a record-setting $240 million contract extension that includes $231 million fully guaranteed.
Not only did Prescott become the highest-paid player in the history of the sport when he put pen-to-paper on his new deal but also will collect the most guaranteed money from any contract ever signed in the NFL, surpassing Deshaun Watson’s fully guaranteed contract with the Cleveland Browns by $1 million.
For the Cowboys, the hope is that stability at the quarterback position sets the stage for multiple runs at the Super Bowl during Prescott’s time behind center.
However, Jones has another goal in mind for Prescott, as well.
“I hope Dak is our quarterback for the rest of my time,” Jones, 81, told reporters following the Cowboys’ 33-17 Week 1 victory over the Browns hours after the two sides formally agreed to terms on Prescott’s extension.
Jerry Jones Confirms Dak Prescott’s Colossal Contract Terms
Jones’ comments seem to reflect a coming to terms with his own mortality or expiration date on his tenure as Cowboys owner.
He also went on to confirm that Prescott will in fact collect $60 million, annually, over the life of the deal.
“The figure is right,” Jones said.
Dallas is counting on Prescott being the catalyst for multiple runs at the Super Bowl, and leading the Cowboys much further in the postseason than a disappointing loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card last season.
Jones, though, has no regrets over the price the Cowboys paid to keep Prescott in Dallas for the foreseeable future.
“The bottom line is that it’s well deserved.” Jones said, per Sam Gannon of KDFW. “What really counts though is these next five years and I am excited with Dak as out quarterback.”
