The New York Jets had an Achilles injury derail their season in 2023. Another Achilles injury will impact the team in a big way for the 2024 season.
An Achilles injury crushed the New York Jets last season
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles tear on the Jets’ first offensive drive last year. Rodgers attempted to get his body in shape to return to the playoffs if the team made it that far. Unfortunately for the Jets, the team was unable to reach the playoffs without Rodgers leading the offense.
Rodgers is back this season, and the Jets were 0-1 following a disastrous start to the season in Week 1 when they were blown out on Monday Night Football by the San Francisco 49ers.
The Jets were playing much better in Week 2, as Rodgers’ two touchdown passes had the Jets tied with the Tennessee Titans 17-17 in the fourth quarter.
Jermaine Johnson II suffered an Achilles injury
Unfortunately for the Jets, the team lost starting pass rusher Jermaine Johnson II. He was carted off the field.
Per Ari Meirov with the 33rd Team, the Jets ruled out Johnson for the game with an Achilles injury.
The Jets selected Johnson in the first round of the 2022 draft. He made the Pro Bowl last season after recording 7.5 sacks. He recorded two total tackles last week.
The Jets must extend Haason Reddick’s contract
Johnson’s injury concerning for a Jets’ defense that was missing another starting pass rusher. Haason Reddick has not joined the team this season as he holds out for a new contract.
The Jets defense didn’t look good without Reddick on the field against the 49ers in Week 1. There will be more pressure in the coming days for the Jets to give Reddick a new deal after Johnson’s season-ending injury.
