Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams could be in a bit of trouble after a controversial touchdown celebration that legend Marshawn Lynch made famous. During the convincing 52-6 victory by the Lions over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jameson Williams hauled in a 64-yard touchdown reception. Williams stooped to his business as he crossed the goal line and pulled on his groin—an infamous gesture by Lynch himself that has seen other players fined in the past.
Marshawn Lynch’s Iconic Celebration
Beast Mode Marshawn Lynch made the groin grab famous during his time in Seattle. Most memorably, on his 79-yard touchdown run against the Arizona Cardinals in 2014, Lynch leaped into the end zone and grabbed his crotch in celebration. Lynch drew an $11,050 fine from the league for unsportsmanlike conduct.
This celebration became synonymous with Lynch’s powerful running style and that of his rebellious persona.
Possible Penalty for Williams
These can easily get Williams in trouble, given the NFL’s stance on such celebrations in the past. The league has fined players for the same actions several times, proving that it does try to keep a level of professionalism on the field. Provided that Williams only imitated a gesture from a former star in Lynch, this may very well equate to financial penalties and a strong warning from the league for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Williams’ Performance and Team Impact
Controversy notwithstanding, Williams did a very good job against the Jaguars. He made four receptions for 124 yards, including the 64-yard touchdown, that greatly helped the Lions dominate on offense. Through eight games this season, Williams has 538 receiving yards on 24 receptions; his per-reception average sits at an incredible 22.4 yards.
Their offense has been stout, ranking second in the NFL at 31.6 points per game entering Week 11. Quarterback Jared Goff threw for 412 yards and four touchdowns in the win over the Jaguars, while wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown chipped in with 11 receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Its rushing attack was strong, too, totaling 196 yards, as David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs added touchdowns on the ground.
Looking Ahead
With the Lions set to take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 12, the possible fine for Williams’ celebration brings into focus just how strict the NFL policies are on in-field behavior and conduct. Players often want to let their personalities shine and celebrate their accomplishments, but the league has rules in place to assure a level of sportsmanship and professionalism.
Pundits and fans alike will be quick to notice how the NFL handles Williams this time and what effect it will have on the player in the future. Until then, the Lions remain at the top of the standings and hot due partly to Williams.
