Penn State has added some of the highest touted prospects through verbal commitments for the 2023 class this offseason. On Monday, four-star running back London Montgomery became the latest Pennsylvania high school running back to commit to the Nittany Lions. With his verbal commitment, Montgomery now becomes the sixth Pennsylvania running back that head coach James Franklin has recruited. The Nittany Lions 2023 class is ranked sixth in the country, having already locked up 17 recruits.
A little bit more about Penn State’s newest commit
The 5’10 running back out of Scranton Prep, is currently the number one ranked running back in the state of Pennsylvania. Montogomery is listed in the top 400 in the country amongst high school players currently.
He was one of two running backs that were highly recruited by Franklin and Penn State. The other being Treyaun Webb, who recently announced his commitment to the Florida Gators.
Montgomery’s speed and ability as a pass catcher will be an asset for Penn State when he takes the field next fall. Montgomery chose Penn State over Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa, as well as Virginia Tech and Boston College.
A tradition of elite running backs continues at Penn State
Although London Montgomery won’t step foot on campus in State College until next year, there is still a high projection for the impact he will have on the Nittany Lions offense. That is expected considering the long line of running back greats that have played for the Nittany Lions.
Running backs such as Andre Robinson, Saquon Barkley, Miles Sanders and Journey Brown have all played an integral part in advancing the running game. This fall, fans will get to see that great tradition continue. Another Pennsylvania running back, Nick Singleton, will make his debut at Beaver Stadium. Singleton was the 2022 Gatorade National Player of the Year.
Barkley and Sanders success at PSU and in the NFL has played a big part in the recruitment process. Allowing James Franklin to continue to secure the best high school players in Pennsylvania as well as the country.
Other Notable Penn State commitments
London Montgomery isn’t the only big name that has committed to Penn State for 2023. Just last week, four-star safety Elliot Washington announced that he had flipped his commitment from Alabama to PSU. Washington verbally committed to Alabama in January. But he appeared to keep his options open. Making official visits last month to not only to State College but also Michigan State.
Franklin and the Nittany Lions added five commitments to their current total in June. Four-star safety King Mack was one of the biggest recruits to commit. Mack currently plays high school football at St. Thomas Aquinas in Miami, Florida. A high school known for producing top football talent.
