“We’re Having Open Conversations”: Jacksonville Jaguars Eye Extension for 1st Overall Pick

The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted a talented pass rusher in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, selecting Travon Walker first overall. Since then, Walker has developed into a solid pass rusher, forming a great complement to Josh Hines-Allen, and is coming off back-to-back seasons with ten sacks. He had one of his best seasons in Year 3, recording 61 tackles, 13 TFLs, 15 QB hits, 10.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 17 starts.

Since he has completed his third regular season, Travon Walker is eligible to negotiate and sign a contract extension this offseason. Also, because he is a first-round pick, Walker has a fully guaranteed 5th-year option due in May for the 2026 season. Because he met the playing time threshold and didn’t make it to a Pro Bowl in his first three seasons, his 5th-year option is categorized under tier 2, the playtime tier, worth $14.751 million.

During their annual NFL League Meetings, Head Coach Liam Coen told the media that they have had conversations with Travon Walker regarding a contract extension. Coen went on to say they have had a number of good conversations with Walker, and he praises him for wanting to take the next step and become a dominant pass rusher.

“Yeah, we’re having open conversations,” Coen said via Zak Gilbert of Sports Illustrated. “And at the end of the day, we’ll continue to have those. James and Tony and I will have those conversations as we go, for sure.

“I’ve had some good conversations with Tray. We’ve had a number of hour-long conversations where, man, I feel a guy that wants to go be great, that wants to continue to take the next step and dominate. I can feel that from him.”
