The season is quickly slipping away from the Jacksonville Jaguars, to the point that head coach Doug Pederson hasn’t ruled out benching starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Lawrence had a putrid performance on Monday night in Buffalo against the Bills, completing 21-of-38 passes for 178 yards with one touchdown to one interception in a systematic 47-10 shellacking.“There has to be changes, whether it’s play design, personnel, everything,” Pederson told reporters following Monday night’s game. “Everything’s on the table, let’s call it, and those are all things that I have to look at, we have to look at as a staff and make the adjustments.
“You say everything is on the table, we’ve got to take a look at injury … Tonight, we had some guys injured. Could be moved that way. Could be performance. It’s all things we have to evaluate as we move forward.”
It sure sounds like Pederson plans to evaluate Lawrence’s role, amid a disappointing start for the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Through the first three games, all Jaguars losses, Lawrence seems to have regressed dramatically, completing only 52.8 percent of his passes for 560 yards with two touchdowns to one interception.
Jacksonville Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence Stunningly Disappointing
Lawrence’s performance has been stunningly disappointing, and comes on the heels of the Jaguars committing $275 million over the next five seasons to the 24-year-old believed to be the franchise’s quarterback of the present and future.
Following Monday’s loss to the Bills, even Lawrence seems to be coming to terms that he may be playing his way onto the bench.
“That’s the NFL: The quarterback has to play well every week to give yourself a shot to win, and I don’t feel like I’ve done that consistently enough, so I put that on myself, and I’ve got to play better,” Lawrence told reporters.
Things won’t get much easier for Pederson, Lawrence, and the Jaguars, as Jacksonville has division matchups over the next two weeks against the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts which could determine whether this team has any chance of competing this season.

There’s zero chance he gets benched, if that’s happens both Baalke and Pederson would be informed their services are no longer needed. The problem with Trevor is the expectations placed upon him, he’s not generational and that’s the media’s fault. The one thing Jacksonville has failed to do is put a QB in the QB room that’s had success. Think that’s why Blake Bortles struggled, think Lawrence would greatly benefit from a Joe Flacco or a Russell Wilson as his back up.
Unlike a lot of people, I don’t think the season is over for Jacksonville, but they needed to get back to fundamentals. Their offensive line isn’t good, so they have to get the ball out quickly of Trevor’s hands, RPO’s, bubble screens, play action screens to Etienne. If they can create success with that then start to target Brian Thomas.
This is the group they committed to so they have to make it work.
