It’s Time for the Chicago Bears to retire Charles “Peanut” Tillman’s Number

You already know of all the great Chicago Bears players on defense ever. Butkus, Singletary, Urlacher, and a whole lot more. One of the greatest players on the Monsters of the Midway defense was Charles “Peanut” Tillman. Him, and Matt Forte, are my all-time favorite Bears.

To start, Tillman is the greatest cornerback in Bears history and was an overall beast on the field. Bears fans, and a lot of NFL fans know him for that “Peanut Punch” he had in his career. That is one of the greatest defensive moves in all of sports.

Even in today’s game, defensive backs practice, attempt, and succeed at the “Peanut Punch” move. However, every announcer says, “He did the old Charles Tillman Peanut Punch move, when a fumble occurs.”

In his career, he was an All-Pro in 2012 and two-time Pro Bowler in 2011 and 2012. Also, he was the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2013. That is very fitting for being a Chicago Bear. He has been eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and should be in, but his timing was tough to get in right away. However, he was not going to get in over Charles Woodson.

His number should be retired by the Bears. He is a top 50 Chicago Bear of all time. He can join players like Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Mike Ditka, and a whole lot more. Next, he is also a fan favorite and has raised countless amounts of money for charity.

You can’t go to a Chicago Bears game without seeing a few Charles Tillman jerseys. People can’t talk about the Lovie Smith era in Bears history without talking about Tillman. Bears fans can’t talk about Urlacher and Briggs without talking about Tillman.

Right now, Jaylon Johnson doesn’t deserve to wear Tillman’s #33. He hasn’t lived up to the hype and hasn’t respected that number with his poor playing and poor effort. This would be a great opportunity for the Bears franchise.
