On Friday, the New York Jets added depth to their secondary and wide receiver corps. However, the Jets are dealing with significant injuries on both units. One of Aaron Rodgers’ friends and teammate, Allen Lazard, is dealing with soreness early at camp.
Per a statement by the Jets, the team made five roster moves on Friday. They released wide receiver Marcus Riley and tight end Kevin Foelsch. With an open roster spot from Tarik Cohen’s retirement, the Jets signed three players,
The New York Jets signed a cornerback
Per the statement, the Jets signed cornerback Tre Swilling:
Swilling (6-1, 196) has played in 2 games since going undrafted in 2022 out of Georgia Tech, both for the 49ers last season. He took 33 snaps on special teams. Smith, from New Orleans, first signed with the Titans before a stint with the Saints (2022) and Ravens (2023-24). He signed a reserve/future deal with Baltimore in January before he was waived July 22.
The Jets sign Isaiah Winstead
The Jets signed receiver Isaiah Winstead:
Winstead (6-4, 213) most recently played with the UFL’s Arlington Renegades after a stint with the 49ers in 2023. The Richmond native attended three colleges – Norfolk State (2017-18), Toledo (2020-21) and East Carolina (2022) – before going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. Winstead broke out at ECU with 88 receptions and 1,085 receiving yards, which both led the team while his 6 touchdowns ranked second.
Brandon Smith signed with the New York Jets
Brandon Smith signed with the Jets:
Smith (6-2, 215) also played in the UFL for the D.C. Defenders where he had 18 catches, 208 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Iowa product went undrafted in 2020 and has spent time with both the Cowboys and Cardinals rosters, but has not appeared in a regular season game. Smith totaled 91 receptions, 1,046 yards and 9 touchdowns for the Hawkeyes in 39 games.
All three players lack regular-season game experience, so they probably won’t make the 53-man roster. However, if Smith or Winstead build a quick rapport with Rodgers, they could quickly move up the depth chart. They will be able to compete for a spot on the practice squad.
