Is it time to panic for the Green Bay Packers?
Is it time to panic for the Green Bay Packers?
No, not really. Let’s slow down, take a deep breath, and look at the game.
The Ugly.
The Packers first play of the game was a 75 yard touchdown from Aaron Rodgers to rookie Christian Watson… or at least it should have been. Watson had a morale killing drop that seemed to stick with the team for most of the rest of the game.
4th & 1 on the goal line. We’ve all seen this before. Obviously Dillon gets the ball and they pound the ball into the end zone for 7, right? Wrong. The Packers were stopped short on what could have been another touchdown.
The Bad
Drops, drops, drops. It feels like a tale as old as time. Camp superstar Romeo Doubs had a big drop on the sideline. Watson had the monster drop mentioned earlier. Rodgers was dropped by the Vikings defense four times, really making the absence of David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins much more noticeable.
The Good
While the box score looks bad on paper, and honestly some of the stats might too, there were some highlights worth mentioning. If just two plays had worked out, the Packers would have went into their final drive down by just 2 with plenty of time for Rodgers to pull off a classic drive with a potential game winning field goal try by Mason Crosby. It obviously didn’t work out that way, but 2 plays is a much easier problem to solve compared to some of the issues the team suffered from last year.
While Watson and Doubs did have some big drops, they also came back and make some solid catches later in the game.
The run game did start a bit slow, but by the later half of the game Dillon and Jones started to look more like their usual hard running selves. Dillon finishing with 45 yards and a TD on 10 carries, Jones finishing with 49 yards on 5 carries.
The Final Thought
It’s easy to panic after a week one loss, it’s easy to panic after some players make a mistake or two during a game. Try and keep in mind, though, that even after the train wreck that was week one last season, the Packers went on to win their next seven games and finish with a 13-4 record. There’s still plenty of season left to get things back on the right track.
