Over the last few weeks, the future of head coach Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots has been seriously called into question. Amid a brutal season thus far, the Patriots could look to go in a different direction. Moving on from a head coach like Belichick would de a tough decision for any franchise, but a breath of fresh air could be a good thing for New England.
So far this season, the Patriots have gone just 2-8 and are clearly nowhere close to being a playoff team. In fact, they are more on track for the No. 1 overall pick than they are for their usual playoff appearance.
Belichick and company have been unable to find a way to turn things around. Following their embarrassing 10-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 10 action in Germany, New England may have already made a decision.
NFL insider Albert Breer revealed more details about the potential divorce between Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Here’s what he had to say on the matter.
“I think, honestly, if I’m Robert Kraft right now, I may go to Bill and say, ‘How do you want to do this?'” Breer said. “I think it’s gotten to that point where they should be able to sit down and level with each other and say, ‘Do you want to sever it now and let Jerod Mayo coach out the season? Do you want to go to the end of the season and we can announce it in December and have a nice ceremony for you for the last home game, or do you want to do this the hard way? And we get to the end of the year and then I’ve got to make a decision on you one way or the other.'”
What’s Next For Bill Belichick And The New England Patriots?
With all of that in mind, it seems likely that the Patriots and Bill Belichick will end up heading separate directions. Since Tom Brady left town, New England has looked nothing close to the level of dominance that had become expected from them.
That isn’t to say that Brady was the reason for all of the success that the Patriots and Belichick have had. It’s simply to say that the duo of Brady and Belichick was an unstoppable force. New England has not been able to put a very talented roster on the field since and are no longer a premier free agency destination for players looking for a championship.
Where could Bill Belichick end up landing if the Patriots do indeed decide to move on from him? There are a few teams around the NFL that could use a legendary head coach to turn their franchise around.
Among those teams are the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Chargers, and possibly even the New York Giants.
Looking at those options, there isn’t one better than the Cowboys. If Mike McCarthy isn’t able to lead a deep playoff run, it seems likely that Jerry Jones would consider moving on from him. Being able to land a coach like Bill Belichick would be hard for Dallas to pass on.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Patriots and Belichick. He may be on his way out of town, and if he is, he will go down as arguably the most dominant head coach for any one team in the history of the NFL.
