Green Bay Packers Use Injury Excuse For Jordan Love’s Regression In 2024

Last offseason, the Green Bay Packers gave Jordan Love a four-year contract worth $220 million. The Packers gave Love the big payday after a season where he threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, helping to lead the team to wild card win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Though his QBR and RTG were higher in 2024 (69.3, 96.7) compared to 2023 (62.9, 96.1), Love’s touchdown-to-interception ratio was worse last season. He threw only 25 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. He also threw for fewer yards (3,389), although he missed two games due to MCL and groin injuries.

Packers head coach believes the injuries and drops were the cause of a “narrative” that Love had a bad season.

“I think there’s like a narrative out there for whatever reason that (Love) wasn’t as productive as the year before,” LaFleur said via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. “Well, he missed significant time. He missed the better of three games. Really, it was Indy. It was Tennessee. He went out in Jacksonville and then he went out in Chicago.

“So, you know, three games is a significant amount of time and you’re not going to produce as much from a numbers perspective … and also, let’s be honest — we’ve talked about this — we did have a lot of drops last year. So there’s other circumstances that play into it. I think all in all, everybody’s going to be better, though.”

Love’s play in 2024 was underwhelming, given the contract Green Bay gave him after he went on a hot streak in the back half of the 2023 season and playoffs.

Stats aren’t a concern for Love in the upcoming season. His goal is to win meaningful games in January and February. He argued that the Packers winning two more games in the regular season last year was proof that he didn’t regress.

“I mean, what is a step back is what I’d ask?” Love said. “You know what I mean? Everybody has different opinions, things like that.”

The only opinions that matter are Lafleur’s and general manager Brian Gutekunst’s. But fans are going to want to see Love throw for more touchdowns in 2025, especially after the Packers gave him wide receiver Matthew Golden in the first round of the draft.
