The Indianapolis Colts are going into the 2024 season with expectations of showing the league that they will be able to compete with Anthony Richardson at quarterback. The 22-year-old quarterback created a lot of excitement last season before he went down with his season ending shoulder injury.
As the Colts enter year two with Richardson, they are hoping to have as many weapons around him as possible. However, one is at serious risk of missing the start of the season.
The Indianapolis Colts Gets Tough News For Anthony Richardson And The Offense
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network:
Colts WR Josh Downs suffered a high-ankle sprain today at practice, sources say after the MRI. His recovery time was estimated at 4-6 weeks, which puts him right up against the start of the season. Downs had impressed, thus far.
IndyStar reported that Downs suffered a high ankle sprain after being dragged down by safety Nick Cross during Wednesday’s training camp practice. Downs left practice early. A high ankle sprain usually requires four to six weeks of recovery time, according to Washington University Physicians. In four weeks, Downs would be back for the season opener.
Shane Steichen was not happy with a play he thought could have been avoided. At the end of a 7-on-7 play, Cross dragged Downs down from behind, and even in full 11-on-11 drills, the Colts have asked defenders to avoid taking offensive players down.
“We’ve got to be smart,” Steichen said. “We’re competing like crazy, but we’ve got to stay off the ground. We can’t go down. That’s the bottom line.”
