The Indianapolis Colts came out hot and put the 3-0 Pittsburgh Steelers in a 17-point deficit. Justin Fields tried to rally back but was unsuccessful as the Colts won 27-24. Unfortunately, the Colts’ exciting young quarterback Anthony Richardson had to leave the game with a hip injury. This is the second injury for Richardson during his early years in the league after joining the team as the fourth overall pick in 2023.
Richardson sustained the injury early in the first quarter after getting tackled in the right hip during a 14-yard carry. He reached for the side of his abdomen and he was effectively substituted off the field. While he went back in the game again for another play, a big tackle by Minkah Fitzpatrick of the Steelers knocked him out again. Richardson was assisted off of the field for further evaluation and returned, seemingly ready to play, but he did not return to the game.
Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson’s Injury Woes Raise Concerns
This is not the first time Richardson has had a problem with his health. In the previous season he missed the Week 3 game playing through a concussion, he later aggravated a shoulder injury that prematurely ended his season. Despite starting the first three games of the season without incident this new injury casts doubt over his durability going forward.
When Richardson was out, there was time for experienced quarterback Joe Flacco, who played outstanding this time. Flacco passed on 16 of 26 attempts for 168 yards for two touchdowns to win the game for Colts. Flacco’s veteran experience to step up and compete was crucial for the Colts, especially given that the Steelers were on a 3-0 winning streak.
The Colts are now waiting for more updates on Richardson’s current condition to be released. With Flacco’s performance, the Colts should breathe a sigh of relief to know that they’re in good hands at the position and shouldn’t feel rushed to bring back their young quarterback. Serious consideration must be given to Richardson’s career and his ability to stay healthy should remain a concern.
