The Indianapolis Colts have a quarterback issue to deal with this offseason, and it concerns the health of Anthony Richardson. The former Florida Gators signal-caller is reportedly dealing with soreness in his shoulder that was operated on during his rookie season in the pros in 2023.
As a result, Richardson did not see action on the second day of Indianapolis’ minicamp last week, which amplified the concern about his shoulder.
The 2025 NFL regular season is still months away, giving Richardson plenty of time to rest his shoulder, but it will be a different story if something more drastic gets recommended to address this nagging issue. For now, Richardson is reportedly set to have his shoulder checked out by the same surgeon who performed surgery on it before, per Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer during an appearance on Monday on the “Rich Eisen Show.”
This isn’t an ideal situation for Richardson, especially with the jury still out on whether he has what it takes to become a true franchise quarterback. In 11 games in 2024, he passed for 1,814 yards and eight touchdowns with 12 interceptions while rushing for 499 yards and six scores on 86 carries.
Daniel Jones as Indianapolis Colts’ Week 1 starter?
Amid the unclear status of Richardson at the moment, Breer thinks that Daniel Jones’ outlook to be the Week 1 starter of the Colts just got brighter.
“There’s a really good chance Daniel Jones is going to be the starting quarterback for the Colts in Week 1, and Anthony Richardson faces a lot of uncertainty going forward,” Breer shared.
Jones spent the 2024 season with the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants waived him in November before Minnesota signed him to its practice squad, but he never saw action for the Vikings on the field. The Colts then inked him to a one-year $14 million contract in March.
In 70 games (69 starts) with the Giants, Jones threw for 14,582 passing yards and 70 touchdowns with 47 interceptions.
