The Indianapolis Colts are setting the stage for a quarterback competition this spring and summer.
After signing Daniel Jones to a one-year contract worth $13 million guaranteed, the former No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft will likely be given every opportunity to unseat fellow forme first-round selection, Anthony Richardson as the Colts’ starting quarterback this fall.

Jones arrives in Indianapolis after being unceremoniously released by the New York Giants last November, and finishing the season as Sam Darnold’s backup in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s quarterback-friendly scheme with the Minnesota Vikings.
If Jones is able to wrangle the starting job away from Richardson, he’ll hit some pretty significant escalators and incentives in his new contract.
According to a report from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Jones can earn up to $3.7 million in incentives based on games started, wins, and whether the Colts wind up making the playoffs.
In a wide-open AFC South, there’s a very real possibility that Jones will be able to guide the Colts back to the postseason, if he winds up the starting quarterback.
All told, if Jones hits his escalators, he could finish this season having been paid up to $17.7 million.
