The Indianapolis Colts are in Week 3 of training camp and have three free practices on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Afterward, they host the Denver Broncos on Sunday at 12:00 P.M. CT. at Lucas Oil Stadium for their first preseason game. Here’s an update on the current state of their cornerback room.
Kenny Moore II looks to start in the slot after signing a 3-year, $30 million contract extension. Moore, a former undrafted free agent from 2017, developed into one of the best slot corners in the league and made it to a Pro Bowl in 2021. He recorded three interceptions and two pick-sixes a season ago.
Their second-round pick from last season looks to start on the outside.
The Indianapolis Colts second-round pick looks to start on the left side
The Colts drafted JuJu Brents 44th overall in the 2nd round of last year’s draft. Brents missed eight games in his rookie season due to a personal matter (Weeks 1-2) and a quad injury (Weeks 8-14). When he played, he was inconsistent, allowing 453 yards, three touchdowns, and a 109.1 passer rating (PFF).
Brents has played well throughout training camp, faces little to no competition, and is the favorite to start on the left side.
The Colts only have one starting spot to worry about at cornerback, the CB2 spot on the right side. Their late-round pick takes the early lead.
The Indianapolis Colts late-round pick takes the early lead
The Colts drafted Jaylon Jones 221st overall in the seventh round of last year’s draft. Jones saw extended playing time as a rookie, starting ten of 17 games and representing 67% of defensive snaps. He battled inconsistency last season, allowing 330 yards, six touchdowns, and a 106.6 passer rating (PFF).
Jones has performed well in their first few weeks of camp. As a result, he took the early lead and is the favorite to start. He impressed their defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.
“I think JJ’s had a pretty good training camp,” said defensive coordinator Gus Bradley after Monday’s practice.
He faces off against a player coming off of a significant injury.
The Indianapolis Colts third-year player will compete for the CB2 job after recovering from an Achilles injury
Dallis Flowers entered last season as the starter and started their first four games. Unfortunately, he suffered an Achilles tear in Week 4. They placed him on injured reserve, and he missed the rest of the season.
Flowers recovered from his Achilles injury and will compete against Jaylon Jones for the CB2 job. Will Jones carry his momentum into preseason, or will Flowers regain his old spot?
