The Indianapolis Colts were walking on eggshells entering training camp. That is because the team has to make sure that QB Anthony Richardson is healthy and ready to play football. Last year, he ended up missing the majority of his rookie season due to a shoulder injury.
Now, Richardson is looking for redemption in his second year in the NFL. Earlier this morning, we received a good sign that he will get that opportunity.
Anthony Richardson Will Play in First Preseason Game
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that QB Anthony Richardson will be on the football field for the Colts’ first preseason game. This game is taking place on Sunday, and the Colts will take on the Denver Broncos. More specifically, Steichen revealed that he expects Richardson to play “a series or two” during that preseason game.
Promising Young Quarterback
Anthony Richardson played in just four games last season. However, he showed flashes of potential in that short stretch.
So, what did Richardson do last season? He had 577 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and four rushing touchdowns. As a result, Richardson quickly established that he was a dual-threat quarterback before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.
The Colts seem to have a lot of confidence that Anthony Richardson is their quarterback of the future. This is because they let Gardner Minshew walk this offseason after he nearly led the team to the playoffs while filling in for Richardson. While the team did sign Joe Flacco to back Richardson up, who won Comeback Player of the Year last season, there should be no doubt Richardson is starting if healthy.
Indianapolis Colts Moving Forward
The Indianapolis Colts are looking to take a step forward with Richardson next season. Despite him missing the majority of the 2023 season, the Colts nearly made the playoffs last season. It took until Week 18 for the Colts to be eliminated, where they lost a heartbreaker to the Houston Texans.
As a result, the goal for the Colts in 2024 is going to be to at least to make the playoffs. More importantly, Colts fans will want to see encouraging signs from Richardson that he will last longer than his rookie contract.
