On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff Committee introduced their first rankings of the 2024 season. The SEC led the charge, with eight teams in the top 25 and four in the top 12. This season, the CFP postseason field will move to 12 teams, an expansion from the four-team bracket since its inception in 2014. Unsurprisingly, many fans and media members picked apart the CFP rankings, especially towards the top of the standings.
Following the first release of the CFP standings for the 2024 campaign, college football and NFL draft analyst Joel Klatt of Fox Sports took exception to the initial placement of the BYU Cougars and Indiana Hoosiers. A combined 17-0, BYU and Indiana sit behind five teams with at least one loss.
College Football Expert Critical of CFP Committee
According to Joel Klatt through his Twitter account:
The clear brand bias of the CFP committee is striking…If you want to rank off eye test, that is fine, but have a set and watch @IndianaFootball without bias…If you want to rank off resume, then have a set and rank @BYUfootball higher than those that don’t touch their ranked wins.
Among college football’s biggest surprises of the 2024 season, the BYU Cougars of the Big 12 and the Indiana Hoosiers of the Big Ten remain undefeated following the first weekend of November. However, the strength of the schedule hurt the two thriving programs per the CFP Committee, placing them behind five 7-1 teams.
BYU has just one win over a ranked team (8-1 SMU on the road), while Indiana has yet to beat a top-25 opponent. Yet, BYU has scored 34 more points in six straight games, with four of those victories coming by double-digits. As for IU, they have been one of the most dominant teams in the country, scoring 46 points per game while surrendering 13.7 points per contest.
Despite their early season successes, the CFP Committee ranked one loss Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, and Tennessee over BYU and Indiana. Like IU, the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Texas Longhorns have not gained a win over a ranked foe. Klatt, a college football analyst, implored the CFP Committee to physically watch the BYU Cougars and Indiana Hoosiers compete, especially with them piling up dominant wins at the Power Four level.
