The Kansas City Chiefs and other NFL teams adapted from 16 games to 17 games for the start of the 2021 NFL season. This will be the fifth NFL season where the league will have 17 games.

At some point, there is a chance that the NFL could expand to an 18-game regular season, but the players may not want to deal with another game on the schedule. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and other NFL players have spoken out about their feelings if the NFL decided to add another regular season game to the schedule.

Mahomes is one of the faces in the NFL and he has won three Super Bowl titles and has also won multiple MVPs and Super Bowl MVPs already in his career as well. The Chiefs have been the hot ticket in town over the last several years in the NFL.

Well, things could be changing soon in the NFL. Mahomes talked to CNBC’s Alex Sherman about the possibility of the NFL going to an 18-game season in the future. He was not thrilled about the possibility of it and said,

“I think that you’d have to find a way to have more bye weeks, more time spread out. Because, I mean, you’ve seen the amount of injuries that have kind of piled up there at the end of seasons, and you want to have the best players playing in the biggest games. And so if there were a way to get to 18 games, I’m not — I’m not a big fan of it. But if there were a way, I think you’ve got to add some bye weeks in there to give more time for guys’ bodies.”

The last time two byes occurred in the NFL was in 1993. This would not be a good idea for the NFL. It was a mistake when the league went to 17 games. It would be a mistake if the league went to 18 games and two byes. Players like Mahomes and others won’t go for it because it will increase the risk of injuries even if the owners were to make more money from an extra game because it seems like that is all they care about.
