Every football game is won in sixty minutes of play. Sometimes, however, it takes every second of those sixty minutes to decide a victor. That was the case in the Illinois—Rutgers matchup on saturday. Illinois snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by completing a 40 yard touchdown pass with only 4 seconds left on the clock. A flurry of late game scores led to that cataclysmic finish.
The Back And Fourth Q4
Both teams piled up a total of 37 points in the fourth quarter but it was Illinois who took over much of that, scoring 23 points in the last 15 minutes. The Illini had 3 drives in the fourth quarter, all of them were touchdowns. Highlighting this stat even more, the last four Illini drives ended in touchdowns. Three of these touchdowns came on the ground.
Rutgers would put up some points late to force Illinois into some unfavorable spots. In the end, it turned out to not be enough.
What Went Wrong For Rutgers
Rutgers did play a good game and forced Illinois to give it everything they had. Scoring 31 points against any power five opponent is nothing to sneeze at. Despite a few poor throws and some drops, the Rutgers passing attack seems to be chugging along and making more progress as the games go on. The rush attack for the Scarlet Knights showed dominance over Illinois’s rush defense and gashed them for 213 yards on the day. So that begs the question, what went wrong for Rutgers?
The first and most obvious culprit is the poor defensive play. Rutgers’ defense left up 431 yards of total offense to Illinois, almost 50 more yards than they gained themselves, while being on the field for almost five minutes less than their offense. The final touchdown of the game was scored because several defensive backs put themselves in poor tackling positions, leading to them giving up a big play.
Where Do Both Teams Go From Here?
Illinois will play their last game of the season at in state rival Northwestern. They had already clinched their bowl bid going into this game and stand to only have an improved position after the win. This game will be held at historic Wrigley Field
Rutgers will go on the road to play Michigan State in what will be a win or go home game for the Spartans on their senior night. The Knights already qualified for a bowl game and will be looking to get a win for an upper teir bowl game.
