The Cleveland Browns finished with a 3-14 record in 2024 and there is a chance that they could be headed towards another bad 2025 NFL season as well. During OTAs, mandatory minicamp, and training camp there will be a four-headed race for one starting quarterback spot for the Browns.

There is no doubt that Deshaun Watson isn’t even pictured in this race. For now, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett are all fighting for that spot. It appears as if Sanders is behind the other three on Cleveland’s depth chart at the moment. Who will the starting quarterback be for the Browns by the middle of the 2025 NFL season if they are off to a bad start?
Cleveland Browns Radio Discusses What Could Potentially Happen If They Get Off To Another Bad Start Again

Tony Grossi went onto ESPN Cleveland radio on Friday morning to talk about the Browns quarterback battle. Another interesting twist was added to the competition. Grossi was asked about who would be the starting quarterback for Cleveland if they were struggling at the midway point of the 2025 NFL season. Grossi responded,
“If they’re 1-7 and we’re talking about this Monday who’s gonna be number one? I’d say Gabriel.”
Grossi also mentioned that he doesn’t know what is going to happen by November of the 2025 NFL season. If Flacco or Pickett are playing well for Cleveland by then, maybe Sanders or Gabriel won’t be on the field just yet. He thinks maybe Sanders will get better as time goes on, but Grossi also mentioned to ESPN Cleveland about what the current order of the Browns quarterback depth chart is at the moment.
“It’s clear as day…Shedeur is fourth, Gabriel is third, Pickett is second, and Flacco is first.”
With the way this order is, there is a chance that Sanders may not make the team out of training camp. It would be a major surprise if Cleveland kept four quarterbacks on the roster to begin the 2025 NFL season. It would be a dumb move if they would cut a third-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft in Gabriel.
More likely, Sanders would get cut since he was a fifth-round selection and is not a guarantee to make the roster. It is clear that head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry would rather Gabriel on the roster than Sanders. However, there is a chance that owner Jimmy Haslam would rather have Sanders on the roster and that could get interesting when it comes to making roster changes. Cleveland’s quarterback battle is going to be one of the biggest mysteries for the upcoming 2025 NFL season also.
