The postseason for college football has started in December. One team suffered a humiliating defeat on Friday.
The FBS is set to have their first-ever playoff game on Dec. 20 when No. 7 Notre Dame hosts No. 10 Indiana at Notre Dame Stadium.
A college football team struggled on Friday night
The FCS has been using the playoff format for a while, and to great success. However, Friday night’s quarterfinal contest at Bobcat Stadium between No. 8 Idaho (10-4) and No. 1 Montana State (14-0) was a stinker. The Bobcats and Vandals met for the second time in 2024, the first matchup ending in a 38-7 win for Montana State on Oct. 12 in Bozeman.
Idaho and Montana State played a close game through the early part of the second quarter. The Bobcats took a 7-0 lead on their opening drive, but an interception by Isiah King via Montana St. quarterback Tommy Mellott would breathe life into the Vandals. On Idaho’s next play, quarterback Jack Layne would hit Jordan Dwyer for a 55-yard touchdown to tie it up.
Montana State pulled away big-time
Idaho and Montana State would share a 10-10 tie before the Bobcats started to pull away before halftime. Montana St. scored three touchdowns in less than four minutes to take a 31-10 lead after two quarters. The Bobcats would wind up scoring 42 unanswered points before Idaho would score again.
Montana State outgained Idaho in total yards 457-407 on their way to a 52-19 victory. The real difference in the game was third down efficiency, as the Bobcats went 11-of-15 on third down (1-of-1 on fourth down). Idaho went 2-of-10 on third down, and 1-of-5 on fourth down.
Per ESPN BET, Montana State was a 14.5-point favorite to defeat Idaho. The Vandals’ 33-point loss was nowhere near the spread.
In the semifinal round, Montana State will face the winner of Saturday’s contest between UC Davis and South Dakota.
