Lane Kiffin does not accept no for an answer. The LSU head coach revealed his relentless recruiting philosophy during his National Signing Day news conference on Wednesday, explaining why he boards planes to chase prospects who leave campus without committing.
When asked about his hands-on approach to recruiting, Kiffin admitted his competitive nature drives these decisions.
“I don’t really do well with ‘no,'” Kiffin said during his February 4 media session at LSU’s Football Operations building. “It just makes me more competitive when someone says no.”

The former Ole Miss coach referenced his pursuit of quarterback Sam Leavitt as a prime example. After Leavitt visited LSU in early January without committing, then traveled to Tennessee, Kiffin flew to Knoxville to intercept him before a planned trip to Miami. Kiffin met Leavitt at the Knoxville Airport to continue his pursuit where he ultimately inked the No. 1 overall player in this year’s cycle.
Kiffin Frames His Recruiting Hustle as Job Responsibility to LSU
Kiffin defended his approach as part of his obligation to LSU. He explained that signing the best players requires doing whatever it takes, whether finding another plane or showing up unexpectedly at airports.

“That’s my job. That’s my job to LSU,” Kiffin told reporters. He added that everything he does is for the school, the players and the fans, even if it makes him unpopular elsewhere.
The coach believes his work ethic matches Louisiana culture. “I like that because I think that wires in really with Louisiana people because I think that’s how they think,” Kiffin said. “Like no job’s too small and find a way to go get it done.”
His methods have produced results. LSU signed the No. 1 transfer portal class in college football with 42 total transfers, including three players ranked first at their positions.
Jordan Seaton Recruitment Shows Pattern of Persistent Pursuit
Kiffin employed similar tactics with offensive tackle Jordan Seaton. The former Colorado star visited LSU in mid-January, and sources indicated Kiffin did everything possible to prevent Seaton from leaving without committing.
Seaton initially canceled a scheduled dinner with Kiffin, suggesting LSU was losing ground to Oregon or Miami. However, Seaton committed to LSU on Jan 23, becoming the No. 4 overall prospect and No. 1 offensive tackle in the transfer portal.

The Tigers now have nine Top-100 transfer portal players, more than any other program. Kiffin’s willingness to chase recruits personally has helped LSU land quarterback Sam Leavitt, edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, and Seaton.
