Hugh Freeze Discusses Cam Newton’s Auburn Jersey Retirement

Before Week 1, Auburn coach Hugh Freeze discussed how he feels about former quarterback Cam Newton getting his jersey retired by the school this season.
“Man, congratulations to Cam Newton on his jersey retirement. I think that’s incredible for him and his family and all he did for this program. I got to visit with him last week and kinda knew it was coming and got to celebrate that with him some. So we are very proud of that and it’s obviously very deserving.”
Cam Newton only played one season with the Auburn Tigers in 2010 after transferring from the Florida Gators. However, he shined as he won the 2010 Heisman Trophy as he completed 185 of 280 (66.1%) of his passes for 2,854 yards with 30 passing touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also was a dominant runner as he had 264 rushing attempts for 1,473 yards (5.6 yards per carry) with 20 rushing tocuhdowns and added a pair of receptions for 42 yards and a receiving touchdown that season.
In addition to the Heisman, Newton was named an All-American as well as the 2010 SEC Offensive Player of the Year. This would lead him to be selected first overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Cam Newton’s jersey retirement will take place when the Auburn Tigers host the Georgia Bulldogs on Oct. 11.
