Week one started versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and all I can say is “How ’bout them Cowboys.” Now that that’s out of the way, the Cowboys and the fans could be looking at a long, rough season. Unless the Buccaneers are a way better team than the rest of the league. Unfortunately I do not think that is the case, and the Cowboys are simply not looking good.
Where are the receivers?
While Cowboys fans knew they had a weak wide receiver core it was unclear how much that would hurt their usually high powered offense. After watching the game and looking back at Dak Prescott stats it seems very clear. In order to take pressure off Ceedee Lamb the Cowboys need other offensive players to step up. Players such as Dalton Schultz and Noah Brown were able to make some catches but their efforts were not enough. They will be looking for more from their running backs in order to open up some easy passing lanes.
Did the Defense Play Well?
Short answer, yes and no. Tom Brady is a very good quarterback and that makes it hard to gauge. He was able to methodically control the game combined with the rushing attack of Leonard Fournette. Yet the Cowboys defense was able to keep the scoring to a minimum. They performed well in the red zone only allowing one touchdown, especially Micah Parsons. He came up with two big sacks on key third downs, forcing field goal attempts. Another positive point was the Donovan Wilson interception.
The Dak Factor
Towards the end of the game Dak got his throwing hand hit two play in a row and came out. He immediately went into the locker room for x-rays The game was basically over at this point and Cooper Rush came in. Nothing Rush did lost the game for the Cowboys, and he certainly was not able to win it for them. Currently the word on Dak is that he is in need of surgery and will miss four to eight weeks. This thumb injury is going to leave the already weak offense hurting.
0-1 Start
The game was a bust and there is a lot to improve on. The rest of the NFC East was able to pull out wins in their opening games so we are starting from the bottom. Potential to make the adjustments is there, providing the defense can keep up its work in the red zone. Cooper Rush is going to have to find a way to get wins while Dak is out. Also, even though our special teams star, KaVontea Turpin, wasn’t able to get anything going tonight he is very capable. Special teams will need to step up in place of some missing weapons on offense. That being said, on to the next game, and “How ’bout them Cowboys!”
