Houston Texans star versatile offensive lineman Tytus Howard had a nice bounce-back 2024 season after a rough 2023 campaign, battling injuries and playing a career-low seven games. Howard began the year as the starting right tackle for his first 12 games and later converted to left guard for their final four regular season and two playoff games. He showed improvements in pass protection while facing challenges in the run game.

Tytus Howard enters the second year of his 3-year, $56 million contract extension, which he signed during the 2023 offseason. Howard is scheduled to earn a $15.5 million base salary along with a $23.05 million cap hit in 2025. Finally, he is also set to earn a $17.5 million base salary along with a $25.075 million cap hit in 2026.
Since they don’t have much cap space, $18.9 million to work with, the Texans needed to free up some cap for them to extend Danielle Hunter, who enters the final year of his deal, and he wants a contract extension around $30 million per year.
Houston Texans restructure star offensive lineman’s contract
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, the Texans restructured Tytus Howard’s contract by converting $14.33 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, adding one void year, freeing $11.464 million in cap space. As a result, Howard’s base salary drops from $15.5 million to $1.17 million, and his cap hit drops from $23.05 million to $11.581 million in 2025. Finally, his $11.464 million prorated signing bonus will be evenly spread for the next five years at a rate of $2.866 million.

Where will he line up in 2025?
Since they traded elite 5x Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil to the Commanders last week, the Texans need a new starting left tackle for the 2025 season. However, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, the expectation is for Tytus Howard to start at left tackle while Blake Fisher starts at right tackle. Howard logged over 245 snaps, including four starts at left tackle during the 2021 season, and excelled at it.
