Depth on the roster is necessary for any team to become successful. Throughout the grind of an 18-week regular season, including a three to four-week playoff run if the team makes it or advances, injuries to players and other obstacles are bound to happen, which is the nature of the game. Still, depth is the security blanket for the team to rely on. For the second-rounder 2019 draft pick, Trysten Hill, depth may or may not be on his side heading into training camp next month.
In three seasons with the team, Hill has just 27 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and two tackles for loss. After a subpar rookie season, from not playing that much as much while letting his attitude get in the way, others in the Dallas Cowboys organization labeled him as “uncoachable.” In 2020, Hill showed flashes of his potential and was somewhat having a bounce-back year until he was injured with a leg injury in Week five versus the New York Giants in the midst of one of the worst defenses in National Football League history under the leadership of Mike Nolan.
With Nolan out in 2021 and coming, defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn Hill found himself in the rotation after injury, playing in six games totaling 161 snaps. We’re here in 2022 in Hill’s last year under contract, which is the time for him to prove that he belongs on the team this upcoming fall.
Osa Odighizuwma and Neville Gallimore are locked to make the team in 2022 while still on their rookie deals, and both having great potential to be anchors on the interior defensive line for years to come. John Ridgeway, Carlos Watkins, and Quinton Bohana are all in the loop to be behind them in the rotation, but most likely, the Cowboys will only keep two out of three, which will make it even more an uphill climb for Hill.
Hill can rush the passer and cause some havoc in the backfield, which sets him apart from the other three and something that the Cowboys like, which has kept Hill around. That along may be his ticket to beating out one of those three guys to claim his roster spot in Oxnard this summer, but only time will tell.
