The Detroit Lions finished with a 15-2 regular season record before losing to the Washington Commanders in the NFC divisional round. Detroit had one of the best offenses in the NFL during the 2024 season.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was one of the engines on this Lions offense. Gibbs is viewed as one of the top running backs in the NFL by many. Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry are viewed as the top two running backs in the sport. Is the Lions starting running back right behind them as well?

AFC Executive Makes Bold Comparison For Detroit Lions Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs Entering the 2025 NFL Season

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) celebrates the win against the Minnesota Vikings and becoming the 2024 NFC North Champions at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025. Gibbs broke the record for most touchdowns in one season with 19 touchdowns.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN talked to many executives, coaches, and other people across the league about the running back position entering the 2025 NFL season. To no surprise, Barkley was the number one ranked running back and Henry was the number two ranked running back.

At number three, Gibbs was ranked in the Top 10 running backs group entering the 2025 NFL season. One AFC executive said about the Lions running back,

“He’s a lot like Reggie Bush, just with a little bit more power. Size will always be a little bit more of an issue with him, but his speed and instincts and ability to change the game are a problem and may be the best in the league.”

This will be Gibbs’s third season in the NFL. The Lions selected him 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft and a lot of people were making fun of Detroit at the time for that selection. Well, it has turned out well for them and the running back duo of Gibbs and David Montgomery is one of the best in the NFL.

Gibbs had a tremendous 2024 season for Detroit and rushed for 1,412 yards on 250 carries and 16 touchdowns, along with averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He also caught 52 passes for 517 yards receiving and four touchdowns, along with averaging 9.9 yards per reception. He was fifth in the NFL in rushing yards and was tied for first in rushing touchdowns in the NFL during the 2024 season.

If the Lions are going to win the division title for the third straight season in the NFC, Gibbs is going to have to have another elite season. Detroit has one of the best offensive lines in the league and Gibbs should have another big year for this football team. However, the comparison of him being Bush could be a bit much.
