The LSU Tigers pulled off the upset on the road against the Clemson Tigers in a 17-10 win this past Saturday night. Garrett Nussmeier against a defense who has a ton of NFL bodies completed 73.7% of his passes for 230 yards and one touchdown.

Entering the game, he was projected to be one of the top quarterbacks selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. After the first week of the 2025 college football season, Nussmeier could potentially be the favorite to be the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft over Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning. What does this mean for the LSU quarterback moving forward?
Latest NFL Mock Draft Has LSU Tigers Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier As the Top Quarterback On the Board

Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports created his NFL 2026 mock draft after the first week of the college football season. Well, Wilson thinks that the New Orleans Saints are going to have the top selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. He believes that Nussmeier for LSU will be the number one pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Wilson said about the Tigers starting quarterback,
“It’s not hard to see that Nussmeier is a coach’s son — he plays like a grizzled NFL veteran and when he’s on it’s pretty easy to see LSU Joe Burrow. The issues arise when Nuss Bus tries to do too much — and that was something of a theme as the ’24 season progressed and LSU Joe Burrow turned into New England Mac Jones. If Nussmeier can limit the poor decisions and untimely turnovers, he’ll have a great chance to be the No. 1 overall pick.”
Well, there is a lot of game left in the 2025 college football season. If Nussmeier can complete over 70% of his passes every single week and limit turnovers, there is no doubt that he is going to be in the Heisman Trophy conversation for a majority of the 2025 season.
Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels are the recent LSU quarterbacks to win the Heisman Trophy. They also have been drafted high in the NFL Draft. Can Nussmeier also be a high draft pick in 2026? Him potentially staying in the state of Louisiana and being a potential franchise quarterback for the Saints down the road does not feel out of the question.
