The Minnesota Vikings are preparing for J.J. McCarthy to be the starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season. McCarthy sat out the entire 2024 NFL season because of a torn meniscus injury suffered during the preseason.

Sam Darnold was the starting quarterback in 2024 and left in free agency for the Seattle Seahawks. In 2025, McCarthy will look to lead Minnesota back to the playoffs after they had a 14-3 record during the 2024 NFL season. Will McCarthy have a lot of success right away or will he struggle out of the gates?
Minnesota Vikings Player Compares J.J. McCarthy To Josh Allen

Vikings defensive lineman Harrison Phillips spoke to the media during OTAs about McCarthy. He was also on the Buffalo Bills when he was with quarterback Josh Allen. However, Phillips made an interesting comparison with Allen and McCarthy. He said,
“He’s got some confidence, and he reminds me of like Josh Allen when I was with him in Buffalo. Coming into his own and understanding the power that he has to lead this organization, and he’s doing a fantastic job.”
It will be interesting to see what McCarthy can do during his first season as the full-time starter. He has a long way to go to become a quarterback like Allen. Allen won MVP during the 2024 NFL season, and some think he is a better quarterback than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
McCarthy will have the necessary offensive weapons to be successful in 2025. Having Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones will certainly help him. The Vikings biggest question won’t be McCarthy, but it will be the offensive line because they struggled to hold Darnold up right in the postseason. There will be a lot of people who will remember Phillips words if McCarthy does not play well in 2025 also.
