Hawaii Earns First Win Against Duquesne

Football is a hard game and a total team effort is required in order to win games. After losing three straight games the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors got their first win of the season Saturday night.  Head coach Timmy Chang earned his first win and was honored by the ‘braddah hood” at Clarence TC. Ching athletic complex.  The Warriors are 1-3 on the season and look to build on their win against Duquesne.

Hawaii needed to play well on defense to secure a victory. Defensive coordinator Jacob Yoro made sure his defense was ready to play. Yoro’s defense finished the game with three interceptions and limited Duquesne on third-down. Duquesne finished the game going 7-17 on third down.

The biggest defensive play came in the fourth quarter while the Duke’s offense was driving down the field. Linebacker Penei Pavahi read the quarterback’s eyes and picked off a pass for a touchdown. Hawaii needs to make more of these plays to help them win more games.

While Hawaii’s defense made plays there is still room for improvement. Hawaii gave up 364 yards of offense. Coach Yoro’s defense will have to correct their mistakes this week during practice.

    Offense does just enough

Timmy Chang’s offense is still growing. The offense wasn’t explosive, but Hawaii did what they needed to win.  Running back Dedrick Parson provided a much-needed spark for the Warriors. Parson finished the game with 11 carries, 58 rushing yards, and two touchdowns. Parson has established himself as Hawaii’s best offensive player. Through four games Parson has carried the ball 51 times, recorded 197 rushing yards, and 4 touchdowns. Additionally, he has averaged 4 yards a carry.  Parson should be called upon to help Hawaii’s offense score more points.

There is still a glaring hole on Hawaii’s offense. Hawaii needs better play from its quarterbacks. Joey Yellen went 13/20, threw for 86 yards, and threw an interception. Yellen hasn’t thrown a touchdown this season and needs to play better.

    Final Thoughts

Still feeling good after win ☝🏾. #BRADDAHHOOD pic.twitter.com/DHrkQmlVII

Timmy Chang should feel good about getting a win. Hawaii is a young team and there will be growing pains throughout the season. If Hawaii can have good practices each week, they can win games. Hawaii plays New Mexico State on the road on Saturday.
