The Arizona Cardinals were winning 21–6 in the fourth quarter against the Tennessee Titans. The worst part? Nobody saw them ultimately end up losing 22–21.

The crushing point came when running back Emari Demercado ran 72 yards and dropped the ball just before crossing the goal line. Not surprisingly, it was his biggest mistake of the match.
A newly surfaced shocking video showed head coach Jonathan Gannon getting very angry on the sideline and hitting Demercado hard out of frustration. The majority of the folks haven’t seen a coach do something like this in a long time.
Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon Violently Hits Running Back Emari Demercado
Demercado’s 72-yard run should’ve been six points. Instead, he celebrated early and fumbled through the end zone for a touchback. Tennessee got the ball and momentum shifted.
The Titans were down 21-6 entering the fourth quarter but scored 16 unanswered points. Joey: Thanks to Slye’s 29-yard field goal that sealed the win as time expired. Surprisingly, Tennessee had the lowest chance to win of any team since 2016 in the game, but they came back after Arizona’s big mistake.
Sideline cameras caught Gannon berating Demercado immediately after the turnover. The head coach appeared to strike his running back, though angles remain unclear. The heated moment showed a coach who’d lost his composure watching a sure win slip away.

Demercado did own the mistake after the game. “I made a mistake. There’s really no excuse… I’ve just got to be smarter,” he said.
His accountability, however, didn’t erase the damage. The Cardinals fell to 2-3, last place in the NFC West. With James Conner banged up, they needed Demercado to deliver. He gave them a back breaker instead.
NFL Fans Rip Jonathan Gannon’s Sideline Behavior
The physical contact between coach and player led to endless chatter. Fans took to social media to debate whether Gannon crossed the line with his sideline discipline. Meanwhile, others saw it as old-school coaching.
One fan wrote, “I have not seen a coach slap a player in many years. At least nothing similar this coming to my mind.”
Another wrote, “Dude slapped him on front of his shoulder pads. Don’t try to make this more than it is. It’s not a participation trophy league.”
The third one noted, “This is one of the most horrifying acts of violence I have ever witnessed. NO VIOLENCE IN FOOTBALL!”
A fourth user claimed, “That’s not ‘hands on leadership,’ that’s unemployment waiting.”
A fifth fan added, “Unacceptable. And kinda weird this isn’t the first time. Maybe teams should make the end zone look different than the regular field so players would know when they can drop the ball.”
A random X user noted, “Some of ya’ll never had your dad coach you before and it shows. ‘Hit’ he said 😂”
The debate reflects changing attitudes about coaching conduct. However, what flew in the ’80s doesn’t play in 2025. Gannon’s frustration is absolutely understandable, but you cannot support it entirely after how he executed it.
