It was biggest game on the schedule so far for the Green Bay Packers yesterday. In a game where rain and wind were a factor all day, the Packers couldn’t get out of their own way again. Simple mistakes, penalties, and turnovers ended up costing them this game. At the end, Detroit came out on top 24-14. The score doesn’t show it but this game never felt that close. The Packers ran seven more plays and out-gained the Lions 411-261. What was the difference? All the little things to be successful. Here are three takeaways from this game.
The Green Bay Packers Defense Held Their Own
After a first drive that took over half the first quarter, the Lions drove down the field. The Green Bay Packers defense got it to fourth and goal on the five yard line, but Green Bay went offsides. That led to a three yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. With how easy Detroit made it, it had the feeling of a long day.
A credit does go to this defense for only allowing 10 more points the rest of the game. They were without two of their better defenders in Jaire Alexander and Evan Williams. There was some pressure on Jared Goff and they didn’t allow for the big play to happen.
The Offense Continues to Make Simple Mistakes
It has been the major story for this Green Bay Packers team in 2024. There are so many mistakes this offense continues to make. I think it’s fair to criticize head coach Matt LaFleur on how this team prepares any give week. The scheme is not the issue. They can move the ball at ease. However, it is the pre-snap penalties, drops, and lapses throughout a game that continues to be a major issue. That doesn’t happen when you focus on the little things throughout the week. It is tedious, but it prevents little issues that can cost you games.
Matt LaFleur needs to get that portion fixed over the bye week. Being committed to the little things and the detail during a game week starts with him. When these issues continue to happen in week 9, you can’t say you don’t practice that during the week, By now, those issues should be be far and few between. We obviously don’t see practice, but its’ hard to convince me otherwise the little details are practiced consistently
The Bye Week Comes at a Good Time
There is so many things that has happened to this Green Bay Packers team through nine weeks. Jordan Love has not been healthy since the end of the Eagles game and there has been a ton of injuries. It is incredible this team is 6-3 and it shows how good they are and can be.
The division is essentially out of reach now, but they playoffs and a deep playoff run is still on the table. I think this team will be in the playoffs, but there is a lot of corrections that need to be made.
I touched on Matt LaFleur earlier, but Jordan Love needs to get as healthy as he can and have a partial reset. For as good as he is, there is way too many interceptions. Some of his interceptions are some of the worst you will find. College and high school quarterbacks don’t make some of those throws. Maybe he’s trying to compensate for his injury, but he would be first to tell you he needs to play better. He does and I think he will.
