The Green Bay Packers will have the national spotlight right away in the 2024 NFL season. In Week 1, they face the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, September 6th. An important note is this game will take place in São Paulo, Brazil.
Packers running back Josh Jacobs recently had a chance to discuss this game. However, he brought up some unexpected security concerns due to local gangs surrounding this game. Read below to find out what those threats are.
Josh Jacobs Says Gangs Will Force Drastic Security Measures
Earlier today, Packers RB Josh Jacobs was interviewed by the Green Light With Chris Long podcast. During this podcast, the hosts and Jacobs got to discuss the conditions surrounding the game taking place in Brazil. This is when Jacobs went into some unexpected details with this:
“They said that the part of Brazil we go into… you can’t even wear green at. Something to do with the gangs. They probably gonna have like… armored vehicles following us. Why are we out here? Why are we here?” -Josh Jacobs
Brazil Hosting Big Sporting Events
This is not the first time Brazil has hosted a big international sporting event. There were two global events in the country just in the last decade.
One of those was the Summer Olympics, which Brazil hosted in 2016. However, this was mainly hosted in the city of Rio de Janeiro. However, Brazil hosted the World Cup in several different cities throughout the country back in 2014.
However, those events did have their own issues. For example, a US Olympian was robbed on the streets of Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Olympics. So, it is not the first time the country has faced safety issues when it comes to international athletes.
Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles Moving Forward
Clearly, both teams will prioritize the safety of their players and coaching staff when flying down to Brazil. On the field, the Packers and the Eagles will have to answer a lot of questions.
For Green Bay, they will have to try to take another step forward after sneaking into the playoffs last season. As for Philadelphia, they have to show that they can return to the 2022 version of themselves.
