The Green Bay Packers their second game of the 2024 NFL preseason by a score of 27-2 to the Denver Broncos. It was an overall pitiful performance by Green Bay, albeit with 31 of their starters and key players not suited up for the game. Needless to say, there were precious few positive takeaways from the contest, at least for the Packers.
Among the notable poor performances were those of quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt, who are competing for the backup job behind starter Jordan Love. Their poor showings have prompted many fans tow wonder if the team will call any of the veteran free agent quarterbacks that are still available.
It should be noted, though, that the Packers’ offensive line did not play particularly well either. One player, specifically, stood out as one that is in serious danger of being cut.
Green Bay Packers Offensive Guard Royce Newman Played Poorly Against the Denver Broncos
Of all the players that took the field for Green Bay’s offense in their miserable blowout against Denver, only one of them played every snap: Royce Newman. The 2021 fourth-round draft pick played both guard spots on the offensive line in the game but did not play well at either position.
According to PFF, Newman finished the night with an overall offensive grade of 54.7, the which ranked 18th out of 25 Packers players.
The fact that Newman, once an effective starter for Green Bay during his rookie season, had to play every single snap of the team’s second preseason game cannot be a good sign regarding his roster status. Last season, despite being healthy for all 17 games, he only played 17% of the offense’s snaps, which was down from 41% the year before.
In other words, Newman may be out the door very soon.
Green Bay Packers Offensive Guard Royce Newman Named as a Trade Target for the Baltimore Ravens
In an article in which they list the most pressing needs of every NFL team, Bleacher Report‘s scouting department named the interior offensive line as the Baltimore Ravens’ second-biggest weakness.
To help improve this aspect of their team, Bleacher Report suggested that the Ravens trade for Newman:
“The offensive line went from a strength to a concern for the Ravens this offseason. The franchise has a good track record with offensive linemen, but it’s relying on young players such as Andrew Vorhees and Daniel Faalele to step in and be starting guards with limited experience.
“Royce Newman has worked himself out of the Green Bay Packers lineup, but he does have 24 starts in three seasons. At the very least he could give the Ravens an experienced backup to go with Ben Cleveland.”
Based on Newman’s performance against the Broncos, it is hard to see any NFL team giving up any form of draft capital to get him. Rather, it is more likely that Green Bay cuts Newman and he gets picked up by a different team afterwards.
