One of the biggest questions the Green Bay Packers faced going into the 2024 NFL season was who their starting right guard would be. Jon Runyan Jr., a former sixth-round draft pick by the Packers in 2020, manned the position for the last three seasons as the starter. Green Bay allowed him to walk in free agency this offseason, and he signed with the New York Giants.
Runyan was not the only vital offensive lineman not to return this season. Yosh Nijman signed with the Carolina Panthers and David Bakhtiari was released after playing just 13 games in the last three seasons.
The Packers, too, did not take any offensive linemen in the 2023 NFL Draft, meaning that young depth on the line was both questionable and lacking.
The Green Bay Packers Took Three Offensive Linemen in the 2024 NFL Draft
For the first time in his tenure as general manager, Brian Gutekunst used the Packers’ first round pick on an offensive lineman. The team took Jordan Morgan out of Arizona, who spent his entire college career playing left tackle.
Green Bay also drafted Jacob Monk and Travis Glover in the later round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Most of the attention going into the season, though, was given to Morgan. As the first-round pick, many expected him to have a big role on the offensive line.
As many predicted, Morgan was moved inside to offensive guard with the tackle positions being held by Zach Tom and Rasheed Walker.
Throughout training camp, Morgan battled with 2021 third-round pick Sean Rhyan for the starting right guard spot. Since Matt LaFleur did not believe that either lineman separated himself in camp, Green Bay has been rotating them at right guard in the early season.
Green Bay Packers Offensive Lineman Jordan Morgan Will Miss Week 3
In Green Bay’s Week Two victory over the Indianapolis Colts, Morgan had to be removed from the game with an injury. He had previously battled a should injury during training camp.
After missing the rest of the game, Morgan also was held out of practice this week.
Addressing the media after practice on Friday, head coach Matt LaFleur said that Morgan would officially be out for the Packers’ Week Three matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
This means that Rhyan will be the right guard all game, giving him a great opportunity to show that he deserves the full-time gig.
