The Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love avoided what could have been a catastrophe on Friday night. When Love went down with just seconds left in the game, many feared that he had suffered a season-ending knee or ankle injury. The Packers lost the game 34-29, but the concern was that they had lost even more.
Fortunately, initial tests have revealed that Love suffered a sprained MCL. While he is expected to miss 3-4 weeks, he will be able to play again this season.
The day before they released their initial 53-man roster, the Packers sent a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Tennessee Titans for quarterback Malik Willis. When their roster was released, it was revealed that Green Bay had decided to cut both Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt, who had been competing to be Love’s backup. Unfortunately, neither performed well enough in the preseason for the Packers to have much hope that they would be a suitable second option.
Clifford was re-signed to the practice squad and Pratt was picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Green Bay Packers Fans Want Ryan Tannehill to Start for the Green Bay Packers
With Love expected to miss a few games, fans are not exactly optimistic that Willis will be a good enough quarterback to lead the team to wins in the next 3-4 games. He has only made three starts previously in his NFL career and has gone 0-3. Willis also has not yet thrown a touchdown pass.
Of course, the Packers always could elevate Clifford from the practice squad, but if they felt comfortable with him as Love’s backup, he would not be on the practice squad in the first place.
Some Packers fans and NFL analysts believe the team should look outside the organization at another former Titans quarterback: Ryan Tannehill.
Ryan Tannehill should be in Green Bay by the time the Packers plane lands at Austin Straubel.

If the injury to Jordan Love does prove to be serious, Ryan Tannehill needs to be in Wisconsin by Monday

Most obvious choice to fill in for Jordan Love: Ryan Tannehill
He spent time with LaFleur in Tennessee https://t.co/nUOzKEGunI

Glad it wasn’t season ending. Here’s to healing up and getting back on field. The Ryan Tannehill watch is on. #Packers https://t.co/X2A3UT0lMK

One must wonder if Ryan Tannehill’s phone is ringing from a 920 area code right about now.

One can understand the concern that fans have over the state of the offense without Love under center. That being said, Tannehill may not be the best choice.
Why the Green Bay Packers Should Avoid Signing Ryan Tannehill
First of all, the notion that Tannehill spent time with Matt LaFleur in Tennessee is not exactly accurate. LaFleur was the Titans offensive coordinator in 2018, the year before he took over as the Packers head coach. Tannehill did not arrive in Tennessee until 2019, after LaFleur had already departed for Green Bay.
Secondly, Tannehill did not exactly light the NFL on fire last season. In 10 games (eight starts), Tannehill completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,616 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Willis may not be a proven NFL quarterback yet, but Tannehill has not exactly been great either.
