The Green Bay Packers begin training camp today. Last night, news broke that three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark had signed a three-year contract extension to remain with the Packers. Prior to the news, there were rumblings that 2024 could be his final season with the Packers, who selected him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Clark became just the third Packers player since the late Ted Thompson took over as general manager in 2005 to receive a third contract with Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers and David Bakhtiari are the other two.
As welcome as the news of the Clark extension was, it was not the contract news that fans have been waiting for.
The Green Bay Packers Still Need to Extend Quarterback Jordan Love
As training camp begins, there has yet to be news of a contract extension for quarterback Jordan Love. Green Bay made the decision to trade Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, to the New York Jets last offseason in order to make room for Love to take over the starting quarterback job. He responded by putting up the best season in franchise history by a quarterback in his first year starting.
Quarterback | Completion % | Yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions | Passer Rating |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jordan Love | 64.2% | 4,159 | 32 | 11 | 96.1 |
Aaron Rodgers | 63.6% | 4,038 | 28 | 13 | 93.8 |
Brett Favre | 64.1% | 3,227 | 18 | 13 | 85.3 |
Prior to the start of the regular season last year, Love had agreed to a two-year contract with the Packers that gave him a raise in 2023 and bought out his fifth-year option in 2024. However, the high-level of his play, especially in the second half of the season, made it evident that he is the long-term answer for the Packers at quarterback.
As 2024 is the last year of that short contract, both Green Bay and Love want to come to terms on a longer deal that will keep the rising star under center for the Packers for the foreseeable future.
Both parties wanted to have a contract signed by the start of training camp, but nothing has been agreed upon yet.
NFL Insider Reveals What Is Holding Up an Agreement Between the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love
NFL insider Mike Florio recently reported for Pro Football Talk,
“We’ve poked around a bit on the talks. There’s a feeling that the ball is currently in the team’s court.
“We also explored whether the primary sticking point is money or structure. We’re told it’s more money than structure, but that a contract like the one Love and the Packers are negotiating has plenty of components.”
The contract that Love is going to sign is likely going to be the richest in franchise history. It also could make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
Love is reporting to training camp even though he does not have a deal, so there is no need for fans to panic. Both sides also want a deal to get done, so there is no reason to think that it won’t.
It is also worth noting that Green Bay probably would not have given Clark his three-year extension, which will pay him over $20 million a year, if they did not know what the parameters for Love’s next deal will be.
