The Green Bay Packers took a tremendous risk during the 2023 NFL offseason, trading away four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. The trade was made, of course, so that Jordan Love, the quarterback they traded up to take in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, could take over the offense. At the time, many criticized the Packers for moving on from Rodgers, just as they criticized the organization when they moved on from Brett Favre.
As was the case when Rodgers took over in 2008, it was apparent that the team made the right decision. While he got off to a slow start due to the lack of regular season playing time both he and his pass catchers had before the year, Love lit the NFL on fire in the second half of the season.
By season’s end, Love had a 64.2% completion percentage, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating. Neither Rodgers nor Favre put up as good of numbers in their first seasons as the Packers starting quarterback.
The Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love Sign a 4-Year $220 Million Contract Extension
After trading Rodgers to the Jets, the Packers and Love agreed on a two-year contract that both gave him a raise last season and bought out his fifth-year option for 2024. The idea was that if Love proved himself, he would sign a much more lucrative contract later.
Prove himself he did. Because of the contract he signed last year, Love could not sign another extension until May of this year. Since then, there have been rumors circulating about how much Love could make.
According to Ian Rapoport, Love and the Packers have agreed to a four-year $220 million deal.

This is not only the largest contract in Packers history, but he is not the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love May Not Be the NFL’s Highest Paid Quarterback for Long
Earlier this offseason, the Detroit Lions gave Jared Goff $53 million a year and the Jacksonville Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence $55 million annually. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also makes $55 million a year.
It remains to be seen how long Love will remain the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback. Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys could very well earn more when he gets his next contract, whether that be from his current team or someone else when he hits free agency in 2025.
