The Green Bay Packers have begun training camp without accomplishing one of their main goals of the offseason: extending quarterback Jordan Love. Last offseason, there were a plethora of questions surrounding Love after the Packers made the decision to trade four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets.
The questions continued late into the 2023 season as Love and his group of first and second-year pass catchers struggled to get on the same page. However, the Packers won seven of their last ten games while Love strung together an amazing second half, completing 68.7% of his passes for 2,667 yards, 21 touchdowns, just three interceptions, and a passer rating of 108.2.
Overall, Love finished his first season as the Packers starting quarterback with a 64.2% completion percentage, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdown passes (second in the NFL), 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Could Become the Highest-Paid Player in the NFL
Love’s performance last season, especially in the second half, proved to just about everyone that the Packers made the right decision in both drafting him back in 2020 and allowing him to take over for Rodgers in 2023.
It also proved that he is Green Bay’s next franchise quarterback. Prior to last season, Love signed a short two-year contract that gave him a raise for 2023 and bought out his fifth-year option in 2024. Now that the 2024 NFL season is upon them, the Packers want to give Love an even longer and more lucrative deal.
Earlier this offseason, Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions signed a four-year contract extension that will pay him $53 million a year. Jacksonville Jaguars star quarterback Trevor Lawrence got a five-year deal that will pay him $55 million a season, which ties Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals for the highest annual salary in the NFL.
There is plenty of speculation that Love’s contract will surpass both of these more recent quarterback deals.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Gets Called “Selfish” by ESPN Reporter
Both Love and the Packers had hoped to have the contract extension done and signed by the start of training camp. However, that has not happened. As a result, Love is refusing to practice until the deal gets done. He is present for camp, but he is not participating in drills.
While many understand his decision, one ESPN Milwaukee reporter believes Love is being selfish:
“Let’s call it what it is, Jordan Love is BEING SELFISH!”

“Stop beating around the bush. Let’s call it what it is. Jordan Love is being selfish,” Kyle Wallace said on the air. “And it isn’t just Jordan Love, it is his agency as well, that is making Jordan Love put himself first.”
Wallace argues that since Tua Tagovailoa is practicing in Miami (he, too, is seeking an extension), Love should be as well.
However, after seeing several NFC North rival players get hurt already in training camp, it is easy to see why Love is waiting until he participates in practice. Getting hurt before signing the extension could change everything.
