While they lost to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, it also highlighted a roster detail for the Green Bay Packers. As it stands, the team could be using a new kicker when their Week 5 matchup against Los Angeles Rams takes place soon, especially after rookie Brayden Narveson has struggled in this aspect of the game.
In a thrilling clash, the Minnesota Vikings edged out the Green Bay Packers with a score of 31-29, propelled by quarterback Sam Darnold’s standout performance. He threw three touchdown passes, with two of those going to receiver Jordan Addison, helping the Vikings establish an early 28-point lead. Despite a spirited second-half comeback from the Packers, Minnesota maintained its composure to remain unbeaten at 4-0, their best start since 2016.
The Vikings’ offense showcased balance, with Darnold efficiently connecting with key players like Justin Jefferson, who recorded six receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Jefferson’s contributions were crucial, as he consistently moved the chains and secured key catches, posting an impressive passer rating when targeted.
Statistically, the game was closely contested, with the Packers outpacing the Vikings in total net yards (446 to 385) and first downs (23 to 21). However, Minnesota proved more effective in the red zone, scoring three touchdowns on six opportunities, compared to Green Bay’s four touchdowns on five attempts.
ESPN Predicts Green Bay Packers Will Make Roster Change After Loss to Minnesota Vikings
Green Bay’s Week 4 loss highlighted the need for a competent kicker in the coming weeks. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers are projected to have a new kicker when the face the Rams next week.
Early prediction for next week: The Packers will have a new kicker. Rookie Brayden Narveson, who missed two field goals in the first three games, missed two more in the first half against the Vikings. He hit the right upright from 37 yards on the opening drive and then missed wide right from 49 yards midway through the second quarter.
The Packers claimed Narveson off waivers from the Titans after a training camp battle between Greg Joseph and Anders Carlson didn’t identify a clear winner. Joseph is now with the Giants, while Carlson remains unsigned.
Following Narveson’s disappointing performance, including missed field goals in a narrow loss to the Vikings, the Packers are exploring alternatives at kicker. They recently held workouts for Chad Ryland and Lucas Havrisik, both of whom have previous NFL experience. The rookie has missed four field goals in four games, raising concerns about his reliability.
While the Packers remain invested in his development, they are considering immediate changes to strengthen their kicking game. A decision on whether to sign Ryland or Havrisik could significantly impact the team’s strategy moving forward.
