The Green Bay Packers are fresh off of their first win of the 2024 NFL preseason after defeating the Cleveland Browns 23-10 on Saturday afternoon. The win highlighted many things that fans can look forward to regarding the roster. Among these things is their depth of talent at the wide receiver position.
Second-year wide receiver Grant DuBose led the team in receiving, hauling in five catches for 66 yards. As fans may recall, DuBose was a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft but did not play last season due to an injury he suffered during training camp. When he did get healthy, he was stashed away on Green Bay’s practice squad.
DuBose’s emergence only adds to the positive dilemma that Brian Gutekunst faces as he weighs his options for the 53-man roster: how many wide receivers should the Packers carry, and who should they be?
The Green Bay Packers Have a Plethora of Talented Wide Receivers
DuBose’s performance against the Browns reminded everyone that the Packers have a great deal of talent at the wide receiver position. As mentioned, DeBose was a seventh-round pick last year. He was also the third wide receiver Green Bay selected in that draft.
In addition to DuBose, the Packers took Jayden Reed (second round) and Dontayvion Wicks (fifth round). Reed set the Packers’ franchise record for receptions by a rookie while leading or tying for the lead in each of the three major receiving categories last season. Wicks has drawn comparisons to Davante Adams after his solid rookie season as well.
Malik Heath was signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2023 NFL Draft and ended up making the roster.
Prior to 2023, the Packers drafted Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure in 2022. Additionally, they signed Bo Melton, a seventh-round pick that year by the Seattle Seahawks, onto their practice squad. Melton ended up having the first 100-yard receiving game for the Packers last season.
Of all the players listed above, only Toure is not considered to be in a place to compete for a spot on the 53-man roster.
NFL Analyst Suggests the Green Bay Packers Trade Christian Watson and Draft Picks to the Dallas Cowboys for CeeDee Lamb
With all of the talent at wide receiver on Green Bay’s roster, it is ridiculous to think that they may be in the market to improve the position. However, Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report suggests the Packers as a team that should look into landing Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb as his contract negotiations drag on:
Cowboys receive: 2025 first-round pick, 2025 third-rounder, Christian Watson
Packers receive: CeeDee Lamb
Moton argues that the Packers could move Watson because of his injury history and that Lamb can step in as the team’s number one wide receiver.
There are, though, multiple issues with this trade idea. The first has to do with what was discussed above: the Packers have plenty of talent at wide receiver. Any of their top four pass catchers could be a number one or two wide receiver on any given NFL team.
The most glaring issue, though, is that of money. All of Green Bay’s wide receivers are on their rookie contracts. Lamb wants to be the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL, which would mean the Packers would have to pay him $35 million a year or more.
That, frankly, is not going to happen. This is the team that did not even offer Davante Adams $30+ million a season until after he had requested a trade and had decided he didn’t want to play for Green Bay anymore. If they weren’t going to pay Adams, they surely won’t pay Lamb.
