The Green Bay Packers have spent the last couple of years completely reinventing their safety room. Now, they will head into 2024 NFL season with a whole new group of players at the position. Former New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney was signed in free agency in a rare big splash by the Packers’ front office.
In addition to McKinney, Green Bay selected three safeties in the 2024 NFL Draft. Of these three rookies, Javon Bullard is expected to earn the second starting job alongside the veteran. Evan Williams, though, has also garnered a great deal of praise during training camp.
Most importantly, perhaps, the Packers fired embattled defensive coordinator Joe Barry and replaced him with Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley, whose previous NFL coaching experience came as a defensive backs coach.
None of the Green Bay Packers Safeties from 2023 Are Returning
Last season, the Packers’ safety room comprised of former first-round pick Darnell Savage, former Houston Texans starter Jonathan Owens (who has made waves online lately thanks to his wife, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles), and special teams ace Rudy Ford.
Savage, who was drafted by the Packers in 2019, never lived up to the success that he had in his first two seasons. In his first NFL season, the Maryland product allowed a completion percentage of just 56.7% and had two interceptions. What is more, opposing quarterbacks had a 71.1 passer rating when targeting him.
He was even better in his second season, allowing a 56.3% completion percentage, picking off four passes, and holding opposing quarterbacks to a 67.3 passer rating.
In his next three seasons, though, he allowed passer ratings of 117.4, 114.2, and 106.9 respectively. Last season, he also struggled with injuries, playing in just 10 games. His dropped interception against the San Francisco 49ers was a turning point in the contest and is pointed to as a contributing factor as to why Green Bay was eliminated from the NFL Playoffs.
Since the season ended, Savage and Owens have found new teams while Ford remains a free agent. Owens plays for the Chicago Bears while Savage signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
And he is about to be joined by one of his former Packers teammates.
The Jacksonville Jaguars Have Signed Former Green Bay Packers Safety Adrian Amos
Earlier today, NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the Jaguars had signed for Packers safety Adrian Amos:

Amos and Savage were the Packers’ starting safeties from 2019-2022. The veteran safety originally signed with Green Bay after his rookie contract with the Chicago Bears expired.
In four seasons with the Packers, Amos played in 66 of a possible 66 games, notching seven interceptions and 362 tackles during that time.
Last season, Amos originally signed with the New York Jets but was released midway through the season. He was then picked up by the Houston Texans.
In all, Amos played 16 games last season.
Like Darnell Savage, New Jacksonville Jaguars Safety Adrian Amos Has Declined in the Last Few Seasons
During his first two seasons with the Packers, Amos held opposing quarterbacks to passer ratings of 85.5 and 85.7 respectively. He also allowed just three touchdowns when targeted during that time.
In his last two seasons in Green Bay, though, he allowed passer ratings of 101.4 and 107.7 respectively. What is more, he also allowed nine touchdowns.
Last year with the Jets, he appeared to be bouncing back, allowing just 58.3% of passes thrown his way to be completed while quarterbacks had an 83.3 passe rating when targeting him. Once he joined the Texans, though, he allowed quarterbacks to have a 140.8 passer rating when targeting him and made just five tackles in five games.
