The Green Bay Packers are eager to provide Jordan Love with as much help as they can to help him win a Super Bowl from the surprisingly competitive NFC North.
While their decision to let Aaron Jones walk is something that caught fans by surprise, the replacement they found for his production was an exciting running back in Josh Jacobs. The former Las Vegas Raider is younger and has shown quality that should make him a great addition to the Packers.
Details about his lucrative $48 million contract show what kind of dent he will leave with the team once he’s officially on their payroll.
Green Bay Packers sign an outstanding deal to snag Josh Jacobs
The Spun’s Daniel Bates wrote about the deal, which was first reported by trusted NFL insider Albert Breer. The deal reveals that the Packers have structured his deal in such a way that only his signing bonus was the guaranteed money he’ll get over the season:
Per The MMQB’s Albert Breer, Jones’ deal is a “true year-to-year deal” with the only guaranteed money being his signing bonus. Here’s a look at how it breaks down over the next four seasons:
-
$14.8 million in 2023
-
$12.5 million to sign
-
$23 million over 2 years
-
$34.5 million over 3 years
The reasons why the Packers decided to get Jacobs over keeping Jones
The most obvious reason for Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst doing away with Jones was his production last season. The 29-year-old is starting to show signs of wear and tear as he only ran for 656 yards and two touchdowns on 4.6 yards per attempt over 11 games.
Meanwhile, Jacobs had higher production on similar game time. Throughout 13 games, he completed 805 rushing yards and six TDs on 3.5 yards a carry.
Moreover, Jones will be more in line with the current age group LaFleur is handling:
Jacobs brings attitude and physicality to a Matt LeFleur-coached team that likes to pound the rock. With so many young weapons on the perimeter, he should give the Pack solid production out of the backfield even though GM Brian Gutekunst says it was hard to watch Jones go.
It will be intriguing to see how well Jacobs will perform now that he finally has a dangerous QB who can take pressure off him. Green Bay fans hope that he’ll be able to replicate the incredible performances Jones gave them throughout the years.
