Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is one of the most accomplished players in NFL history. When he retired following the 2010 season, he was the league’s all-time leader in touchdown passes by a wide margin. He threw 508 for his career, and at the time the next closest on the all-time list was Dan Marino, who threw 420. Now, Favre ranks fourth having been passed by Tom Brady (647), Drew Brees (571), and Peyton Manning (539).

Favre also became the first player in NFL history to win three MVP Awards, and is still the only one to do so in three consecutive seasons. Additionally, the former Packers quarterback led Green Bay to victory in Super Bowl XXXI, ending Titletown’s 29-year championship drought.

Despite all of his accomplishments on the field, Favre was a controversial figure even during his playing days. He has become even more of one since his retirement, as was well-documented in the new Netflix documentary, “The Fall of Favre.”

This documentary focuses primarily on the scandal that surrounded Favre towards the end of his career while he was playing for the Minnesota Vikings. As fans will recall, Favre was accused of sending inappropriate pictures of himself to New York Jets sideline reporter Jenn Sterger, who was featured heavily in the Netflix documentary.

“The Fall of Favre” also mentions the quarterback’s alleged marital infidelity during his time in Green Bay, with a former Packers reporter stating that he refused to write an article about “Favre the Family Man” because “I don’t write fiction.”

But what made the Sterger story so scandalous, aside from the fact that Favre has been married to Deanna Favre for decades, was the fact that he sent those pictures/texts amid his wife’s diagnosis and battle with breast cancer.

An Old Article Deanna Favre Wrote Has Resurfaced Amid the Netflix Documentary Release

The new attention on this old scandal has led to a 2007 article, written by Deanna, to resurface. In it, she gets brutally honest about her husband’s battle with addiction as well as some other not-so-flattering aspects of their marriage.

“Brett got drafted from the University of Southern Mississippi to Atlanta, then traded to Green Bay. After years of soul-searching I followed him up there, only to find out that the quiet, kind Brett I knew and loved had become a loud, rough party animal.

“For the first time I saw a mean streak in him and I didn’t know where it had come from. He had mood swings that he’d never had before. He disappeared sometimes without even telling me where he was going.

“One day I discovered a plastic bag filled with white pills. Painkillers. He was horribly addicted to painkillers, partly as a result of all the injuries he played with. We got through that. He went to The Menninger Clinic and got help. We went through counseling together and he was once again the best friend I’d ever had—and by now my husband.”

This article, as mentioned, first appeared in Guideposts magazine in 2007. This was Favre’s last season in Green Bay, one that saw the Packers lose the NFC Championship Game at home to the New York Giants.

Favre’s attempts to hook up with Sterger (which she rebuffed) occurred in 2008, but did not become public knowledge until 2010.

Brett and Deanna are still married.
