The first season of Bill Belichick as the coach of North Carolina is becoming a plot twist that nobody would have imagined. The former legend of the Patriots, chosen to restore the Tar Heels, is now embroiled in controversy that could easily be mistaken for replicating the last years of his tenure in Foxborough. Many fans are even vocal about it:
“Any coach that has had THIS much nonsense and controversy in year 1 would be judged similarly… especially one who is 73, got fired for running an NFL team into the dirt, and is fooling around with a 24-year-old.”

Bill Belichick Faces Tough Start and Legal Drama in First Year at UNC

Belichick joined the University of North Carolina on a five-year, $50 million contract after leaving the New England Patriots, where he had a record of 4-13 in his final season. According to Reuters, the Tar Heels currently have a 2-3 record and rank in the bottom five of the ACC for both total offense and defensive efficiency.
The struggle went beyond the scoreboard. On September 24, Reuters reported that a former UNC provost filed a lawsuit, claiming that Belichick had been hired after the school allegedly broke the law in North Carolina. Several days later, “People” had confirmed that United Nations coach assistant Armond Hawkins was suspended due to a violation of NCAA rules when he offered illegal benefits to players’ families.
Bill Belichick and UNC believe some of the negative reports about them originate from New England.

Then came the optics. A Hulu documentary on the first season of Belichick was canceled prematurely. Sources said it was due to internal chaos surrounding the football program.
Belichick publicly stated, “I’m fully committed to UNC Football and the program we’re building here.”
He was supported by UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham, who said that Belichick has our complete support regardless of the setbacks. But tension lingers. The reports of the New York Post stated that Belichick prohibited Patriots scouts from attending practices in UNC, a gesture that many perceived as a repetition of his controversial break with New England.
Following the controversy, many fans found it depressing, stating, “Are you kidding me? This crap gotta stop !! It’s so depressing ….”
Another chimed,” Since when has a college coach ever been judged on year 1 of their tenure in college football? Yes, the portal era accelerated the timeline, but 5 games in is a rough judge. And he’s new to the sport.”
One fan stated,” The good news for BB is that he can’t lose today.”
A fan added a chill remark, “Who cares about negative press… You either win or you don’t.”
Numerous others have made the same statement: Belichick’s legendary resume is not enough to save him. It is not only his first year at Chapel Hill; he has to rebuild a college program and preserve the legacy of one of the greatest minds in football.
